Non PBS truck and dog combinations

Truck and Dog Combinations are a common vehicle combination used by the bulk commodity sector, typically in the quarry, fertiliser, coal and landscape industries. The combinations can be unloaded without having to unhitch the trailer and are able to manoeuvre around tight locations such as landscape yards and building sites.

Truck and Dog combinations consist of a rigid truck towing either dog trailer or a pig trailer and are not more than 19 metres in length.

A dog trailer is a trailer with axles at either end of the trailer, a pig trailer has the axles centred on the trailer.

Typical combinations are Super Dogs (3 axle trailers) and Quad Dogs (4 axle trailers)

Most states permit Truck and Dog combinations to operate at increased masses under a NHVR Concession or Notice with general access to all roads.

PBS approved truck and dog combinations

Many larger Truck and Dog combinations can be approved under the Performance Based Standards (PBS) system. These combinations typically include 4 axle trailers (Quad Dogs), 5 axle trailers (Quin Dogs) and 6 axle trailers.

PBS approved truck and dogs are generally limited to the various PBS networks and are only permitted to operate on these networks, if access is required off the network an NHVR Access Permit may be required.

As the PBS weights can be higher than normal Truck and Dogs, drivers must carry a copy of the PBS Vehicle Approval at all times and produce this document to transport inspectors when requested

PBS combinations can provide substantial payload increases to operators however getting access to local roads can be difficult.
