Truck and Dog Combinations

Truck and dogs are a fairly popular combination and can often operate under a number of different schemes to increase their mass and or length depending on the exemption notice (Gazette) or permit (NHVR issued) they are running under.

We’ll cover the most common schemes that truck and dogs run under. It is important you understand the correct scheme and operating conditions for each, as they all differ.

The Truck and Dog Combination Operating Schemes

Statutory Limits

Statutory Limits for all truck and dog combinations are:

* 19 metres in length and 42.5 tonnes GVM.

You get general access to all roads as a statutory vehicle (except where roads are sign posted, curfews, no trucks ,load limits etc) and don’t require any permits or notices to carry when operating at general access statutory limits.

Class 3 Truck and Dog Trailer Mass Exemption Notice

General access truck and dogs that do not exceed 19m in length can operate at additional mass over statutory limits.  

Vehicles under this notice are 3 or 4 axle Rigid trucks (Single steer or twin steer with bogey drive) Towing a 3 axle (super dog) or 4 axle (quad dog trailer).

Note: Under this scheme, you must ensure your vehicle is registered with the state authority (i:e VicRoads) to operate at MR registration.

Under this scheme, depending on what State you are operating, you can achieve around the following masses.

National Class 2 PBS Level 1 & 2A Truck and Dog Trailer Authorisation Notice

Vehicles under this notice allow a Truck and Dog combination to be Super Dog, Quad Dog and Quin Dog at increased weights depending on the PBS approved mass identified in the Vehicle Approval (VA).

Vehicles under this notice are 3 or 4 axle Rigid trucks (Single steer or twin steer with bogey drive).

PBS approved vehicles must operate on the relevant approved gazetted network and in some states require approved tracking i:e TMA/IAP/RIM.

Notes:

Tri drive trucks are not eligible to run under this notice.

Quin dogs require NHVAS Mass Accreditation when exceeding 20T on the tri axle group.

Under this scheme, you must ensure your vehicle is registered with the state authority (i:e VicRoads) to operate at MR registration.

National Class 2 Performance Based Standards (Tier 1) Authorisation Notice

Vehicles under this notice allow a Truck and Dog combination to be Super Dog, Quad Dog, Quin Dog and 6 Axle Dog Trailers at increased weights depending on the PBS approved mass identified in the Vehicle Approval (VA).

Vehicles under this notice are 3 or 4 axle Rigid trucks (Single steer or twin steer with bogey drive).

PBS approved vehicles must operate on the relevant approved gazetted network and in some states require approved tracking i:e TMA/IAP/RIM.

Notes:

Tri drive trucks are not eligible to run under this notice.

National Class 3 20m Long 3 Axle Truck and 4 Axle Dog Trailer Mass and Dimension Notice

Vehicles under this notice are basically brand new (PBS spec vehicles) without the actual PBS VA required.

This is an extremely complicated notice and the one vehicle combination under this notice has many operating conditions, route compliance and more.
