MC3 registration rating

Recently we have discovered several instances where operators are incorrectly paying the significantly higher registration rate of MC3 on their prime mover whereby they should only be paying the lower rate of SP3

MC3 (= Multi Combination axle Prime Mover) is payable if more than 1 trailer is being towed by the prime mover, typically these would be B Doubles, Mini B Doubles, Road Trains, A Doubles and B Triples.

The recent instances have included case where the prime mover had recently been purchased by an operator who only runs a single trailer, however the previous owner had used the vehicle as a B Double, when transferred the original rate does not change unless you request it to be changed

Another instance was an operator who uses a prime mover, low loader dolly and low loader, so two trailers, and then nominated the prime mover as MC3. However, for the charging purposes, low loader dollies and converter dollies are “Not counted as trailers for charging purposes” so only the cheaper SP3 rating is required.

We were able to obtain refunds in both cases so if you think you may be impacted give us a call and we’ll look into it

Yes, confusing isn’t it!
