Changes to South Australia’s RAV laws.

After extensive consultation with both the NHVR and Government of South Australia we can confirm from 1 August 2020, the requirement for SA RAV’s to undergo an annual inspection, or to be in the Maintenance Module of the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme, was removed. This also removes the need for an inspection label.

A RAV in SA is a vehicle that:

  • operates at greater than 42.5 tonnes, such as a road train or B-double, under a National Notice. This includes oversize/overmass vehicles

  • operates under a permit issued by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), allowing access to certain parts of the road network.

You still need to ensure any vehicle you operate is roadworthy. Inspections are still required when a heavy vehicle changes ownership.

This is consistent with the NHVR's National Notice harmonisation program and is expected to create efficiencies for RAVs travelling across different states and territories.

To continue improving road safety and heavy vehicle roadworthiness compliance, additional options will be investigated in consultation with the NHVR and the South Australian Police.

If you currently have Maintenance Accreditation for the sole purpose of operating a RAV vehicle in SA and you believe you no longer require it, please contact our office on 03 5444 4144 to discuss this further.

Seasonal Registration

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve experienced a number of renewal audits delayed by the NHVR as they were unable to validate vehicles were nominated as seasonal registration via their internal link with Government for SA. As a result of this, the vehicles were deemed as unregistered and were not eligible to be included in the accreditation renewal. This resulted in numerous calls to the Government of SA with a number of clients required to then attend a customer service centre to sort this matter quickly.

Don’t let this happen to you.

If you have a vehicle which you believe is, or should be, seasonally registered please contact Government of SA on 131 084 or visit a customer service centre to validate it is correctly registered. We cannot perform this activity on your behalf.

In your discussion with SA, you must be the registered owner of the vehicle (third party callers can’t obtain information) or if the vehicle is registered in a company or business name, they may disclose to you if it’s seasonally registered or not however they will not perform any changes without a signed letter of authority from the company director.
