Did you know that Speed Limiters are a mandatory requirement for certain heavy vehicles?

The vehicles which must have working speed limiters fixed are;

a) heavy goods vehicles built after 1987 with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 15 tonnes

b) buses built after 1987, used to provide a public passenger service, with a GVM greater than 14.5 tonnes

c) heavy goods vehicles with a GVM greater than 12 tonnes with an engine: i. over 300 horsepower, built after 1990 ii. up to 300 horsepower, built after June 1991

d) buses built after 1990, used to provide a public passenger service, with a GVM greater than 5 tonnes.

As the name suggests these are to ensure these heavy vehicles do not exceed their maximum allowed speed of 100km/h.

In recent audit’s, it’s been apparent not all heavy vehicle operators are aware of the mandatory requirement, therefore unaware of whether they are fitted or working efficiently.

Our suggestion to ensure compliance to the law is to perform a simple speed test. If you’re truck is required to have a speed limiter installed, and the truck can exceed the maximum allowed speed of 100km/h then it would be highly encouraged to have them calibrated as this would indicate they are not working properly. Please don’t perform this test whilst going downhill.

To have the calibrated you will need to take them to an authorised repairer. Your first point of contact would be the vehicles manufacturer.

If you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to contact us.
